Sridevi and Salman Khan's first cover shoot together

It all started with a look test - can tall and towering Sridevi work with newcomer Salman Khan...  Saawan Kumar Tak thought so and chased Sridevi for months, trying to get dates for his film. Sridevi, saw that Salman Khan was a successful and rising star, his collab with Tak - Sanam Bewafa -  did wonders at the box-office, so why not? Especially with title roles and a remuneration bump. The producer and director was known for writing good lyrics and had a spotty career with hits and flops - but that's true of any director.

But alas, these projects with Devi and Khan were disastrous for all concerned. Sridevi famously said in an interview she got more flak for these movies than any other in her entire career! Well, apart from the controversies with Masterji - which ended up being a massive hit!

Chandra Mukhi, starring Sridevi and Salman Khan, was released on October 22, 1993.

Directed by Debaloy Dey and written by Anwar Khan (with the story conceived by Salman Khan himself), the fantasy-romance starred Sridevi as a heavenly princess who descends to Earth. It marked the first of two film pairings between Sridevi and Salman Khan, followed shortly by Chaand Kaa Tukdaa in 1994.

Chaand Kaa Tukdaa was released on August 19, 1994.

Directed and produced by Saawan Kumar Tak, it marked the second and final feature film collaboration between Sridevi and Salman Khan following Chandra Mukhi.

Neither film was a box office hit and both were universally panned. Both underperformed commercially at the time of their release. However, surprisingly, Chaand Kaa Tukdaa made slightly more money at the box office overall compared to Chandra Mukhi.

Here is how the budget, box office collections, and verdicts break down for both films:

1. Chandra Mukhi (1993)

  • Budget: ~₹2.25 crore

  • India Box Office (Nett): ~₹1.40 crore

  • Worldwide Gross: ~₹2.15 crore

  • Box Office Verdict: Broke even - but barely.

2. Chaand Kaa Tukdaa (1994)

  • Budget: ₹2.75 crore

  • India Box Office (Nett): ₹2.06 crore

  • Worldwide Gross: ₹3.89 crore

  • Box Office Verdict: Broke even, minor profit.
