Sridevi and Jeetendra in Tohfa (1984): Bollywood anoints its new Queen

Sridevi and Jeetendra in Tohfa (1984). One of her earlier hits with Jeetendra. The song 'Ek aankh marun toh' was a huge hit back in the day... and then remixed in an (awful) music video in the 90's again.

The pop video didn't have the effervescence and innocence of Sridevi and Jeetendra combo. They were naughty on screen but never vulgar; the same cannot be said of many music videos.

Tohfa was a remake of the Telugu film Devatha (1982) and just like its predecessor, was a massive hit. Despite a critical drumming, the film was the biggest hit of 1984, the year Sridevi was crowned Queen of Bollywood, or thus anointed by the press. Most famously in a cover feature in Filmfare. Critics couldn't argue with the mass appeal of Sridevi and her unprecedented run at the box-office. She put both 'show' and 'business' in showbiz!
