Sadma (1983): Sridevi and Kamal Haasan's enduring tragedy

Sridevi and Kamal Haasan in Sadma  (1983). We post this as Sridevi just tweeted an image from the film, reminding us viewers and fans that the Hindi film Sadma [Trauma] was released... 30 years ago today!

Upon re-viewing it (as in watching it again for the n'th time, not reviewing the film!), the profoundness of the film, its performances, the music, direction, characterisation, and the bitter-sweet tragedy of it all, is overwhelming. You sort of are left bereft of breath by the end of it - spoiler alert.

As Sholay, the most beloved Hindi film of all-time, went mostly unrewarded (in the trophy department!), Sadma garnered very few awards too (none for Sridevi, we might add and highlight), though its often seen as one of the best films ever made. We just don't understand why whoever the governing body at these awards functions are, are so myopic. Repeatedly.
