Sridevi's classical dance in Chaand Kaa Tukdaa: Actress wears a gorgeous Bharatanatyam costume

Sridevi on the sets of Chaand Kaa Tukdaa.

Sridevi does a short classical number in the film and does her part gracefully - as always. Her laavni in it was ok, the ballet.... not so much. And her disco bit was pretty cool. Her best look and performance was in the classical stanza.

Though Sridevi never studied Bharatanatyam like many of her contemporaries and other South Indian actresses, she never let that show on screen, preferring to rehearse till perfection so that on screen, in the final shot, it always looked like she was a proficient dancer.

Sridevi told many of her choreographers that she needed to rehearse and asked dance teachers to not believe the myth that she was naturally great. As choreographers have said, she was the ultimate student, learning and concentrating to be flawless on screen.

Sridevi's dance is all too brief in Chand Ka Tukda - the dance montage where she showcases four different forms varies from being excellent to passable... (the classical was great, the ballet....um...).

The film was released in 19 August 1994 and it opened to bad reviews and bad box-office.  She herself noted that the movies were not well received and addressed it in interviews.

Update: Oh dear. We got a note from a trained Bharatanatyam dancer and they weren't too impressed by the classical either. Errr. Ok. You can't win them all.
