Sridevi

Sridevi on the set.

Sari Clad Sridevi in Jaag Utha Insan (1984)

Released on July 6, 1984, the remake of Telugu film Saptapadi (1981), also directed by K Vishwanath, was remade for the Bollywood belt with Sridevi, Mithun Chakraborthy and Rakesh Roshan.

Sridevi acts and dances brilliantly in the intricate drama that sadly, despite its mere 2 crore budget, failed to set the box-office on fire. The film  released in the summer where mindless pot-boilers were all the rage (which Sri later went on to corner). Upon re-viewing on television, many have liked the intense drama. Keen an eye out for the underrated taandav Sridevi does in the film...

Sridevi and Kamal Haasan in Sadma

Sridevi and Kamal Haasan in Sadma...

Sadma. Rarely will you see a more poignant film stream out of Bollywood - esp in that blah 80s era. The movie warms your heart... and then breaks it. A short, sweet, simple... and yet all too profound film. Watch Sadma if you haven't yet. It'll shake your core and soul by its last reels.

Click on images below to enlarge and read more about Sadma, the Kamal Haasan and Sridevi insta-classic. The remake of Moondram Pirai is one of the most profound and devastating movies re-made from Tamil to Hindi.

With innumerable chat feeding the net on the remake, we just want to state its a horrendous idea by all measures. For all its merits, the film did not do well in happy-ending prone Bollywood! And why, oh why touch a masterpiece? Anyone remember the fate of remakes like Sholay, Umrao Jaan...etc?!!

Launch of Kalaakaar in 1983: Sridevi with Kunal Goswami

Son of Bollywood legend Manoj Kumar, Kunal Goswami tried his luck in Bollywood too - with a dream launch with the rising star of the time, a young, 20-year-old Sridevi, back in 1983. Despite great songs and an interesting story line about the struggles of a musician, the film flopped. While the actor tried his luck again and again without much box-office success, luminescent Sridevi orbited fame with utter ease.

Here are rarely seen images of the young pair at the audio launch of Kalaakaar. Rare pics of Sridevi with her mother Rajeshwari and sister Sreelatha at the event below.

Excerpt: Sridevi and Kunaal Goswami, stars of Kalaakar, at a CBS function to mark release of the music of the film.
