Rekha teases Sridevi on the sets of Nazrana.
So here's a quick take on the long association between Sridevi and Rekha. They were friends early on, and had a long, enduring friendship all the way till the tragic and untimely death of Sridevi at the young age of 54.
However, it hasn't always been smooth sailing between the two leading ladies. Both were top actresses of their time and, possibly triggered by cheeky tabloid journalists, occasionally made a dig at the other in print. It was mostly good-natured ribbing as both remained friendly whenever they appeared in public together.
Sridevi had a memorable Cine Blitz quote, "When Rekha's ill, there's no one to give her a pill!" And "Please, I don't want to end up like Rekha" she also said in the same feature.
During an explosive MOVIE magazine cover story, Rekha hinted that Sridevi's look for the song, Mere Ghulam, Tera qatl-e-aam was lifted from a shoot Rekha did for a magazine. Rekha had flown to Thailand and picked up the accessories from a jewellery store in Bangkok. A few months later, Sridevi was seen wearing it on film in Laadla. Though she didn't name Sridevi, it was abundantly clear in the magazines of 1994, who she meant!
However, no harm no foul as Sridevi never spoke of it, and Rekha didn't bring it up again. But when we saw this picture online on social, it brought back a flood of memories from that era.
Rabid fans bring up the rivalry Sridevi had with other actresses, but having sifted through magazines galore and some telling interviews, the sourest lemon in the lot has been Jaya Prada, not Madhuri Dixit, not Rekha, not Saroj Khan, not Sunny Deol.
However, as the industry has proven many a time, there are no life-long friends or enemies in the industry. We can't tether Jaya Prada to the opinions she held, the things she said about Sridevi in the early 1980s - and good God we have so much material in the archives on the bitter ink that's been spilled between the two Telugu women. Jaya Prada spoke with kind reflection at Sridevi's funeral prayer meet. Sridevi attended Jaya Prada's family wedding in 2012. The women let bygones be bygone, so we've removed them from this fan site, as if anything Sridevi's passing has taught us, let's only remember the good times and bury the past.
