Films set in specific eras, period pieces are often given the moniker 'costume drama'. When it comes to Bollywood in the 1980s and early '90s, well, weren't they all costumes and melodrama?
Herewith, just a sampling of the looks Sridevi sported in film, before the advent of recognisable designers, stylists and the entire fashion spawn that has since erupted out of Mumbai and Delhi for the Hindi film industry. God bless Sridevi that she sported the gamut of (questionable!) glamour with such ease and elegance. Very much the doll, she devi-fied the looks to suit the character she essayed; the village belle, the dancer, the Afghan leader, the Queen, the celestial maiden... While certain sartorial scribes in interviews have asked Sridevi whether she cringes when she sees the clothes and dances of the much-maligned '80s, she sportingly says that it had its own style and charm. Indeed. Bless her sparkling socks.
