28 years ago, Lamhe was released with great fanfare, where the actors - all of them - got rave reviews. Having seen it several times, the movie has aged like a fine cask. Its impeccable, polished, refined.... While post #metoo and fema-natzis have overthought the entire premise of the film, we would ask them all to take several seats and chill. It's just a movie - and a great one at that.
For the record, and it bears repeating, the movie was not a washout and it recovered its costs, but the overwhelming expectations were not met at the box-office. Which somehow translates to flop in the media - but by the number, it really was anything but. Yash Raj made an overflow - albeit slowly.
At the 37th Filmfare Awards, the film won five trophies and our only gripe is, it should have won three more; Best Actor for Anil Kapoor (he was robbed!), best Supporting Actress for Waheeda Rehman and Best Choreography for Saroj Khan (Every dance is a gem but the entire nation swooned watching the Rajasthan deserts during Morni).
PS: how about Best Assistant Director joint-awards to Farkhan Akhtar and Aditya Chopra for the film?! They went on to learn and become phenomenal producer/directors in their own right.
