Sridevi and Sunny Deol in Nigahein: Nagina Part II

Released on this day 31 years ago (11 August 1989 - two days before Sridevi's birthday!), Nigahein was possibly one of the first Hindi films to be a proper, planned sequel (in fact, can you think of another Indian film before this that had a sequel*?).

The film was not as big a success as its predecessor Nagina (a veritable blockbuster), but according to Box Office India, it did recover costs and made more than its investment for the producers ipso facto, not a washout as a handful of critics said it was. Its lackluster performance at the turnstiles did however pack up the plans of Nagina Part III; Naghme

It would have been great to see how Sridevi would have taken the role of a morphing snake-woman to its next meta level, but sadly, it wasn't meant to be.

Many other actresses have essayed the part of the "Naagin"; from Reena Roy (Nagin, 1976), Rekha (Sheshnaag, 1989), Meenakshi Sheshadiri (Nache Nagin Gali Gali. 1989), Mandakini (Naag Nagin, 1990), Manisha Koirala (Jaani Dushman: Ek Anokhi Kahani, 2002),  to Mallika Sherawat (Hisss, 2010), but none made an impact at the box-office (or by performance!) like Sridevi did.
