Oscar-winner Bhanu Athaiya created the look for Bollywood's erstwhile queen, the danseuse Vyjanthimala back in 1966.
Variations on the look have been recreated innumerable times. Some more sensuous than others (Zeenat Aman in Satyam Shivam Sundaram!), some meant purely for dance.
