During the 2020 lockdown, on a zoom interview with India Today's Entertainment Editor Sushant Mehta, Madhuri Dixit Nene was asked the question most often brought to her; the alleged rivalry between her and her contemporary in Bollywood Sridevi.
She said;
Q: Tell us about your equation with Sridevi.
Madhuri Dixit Nene: She was a thorough professional, and she gave her whole life to her films. Ever since she was four years old, she started working in films - such a long career. I think I have not even done 1/5th of the films she has done - she has done I guess 400* films or something and a very very good actress, her screen presence was fabulous and you know there was no rivalry as such. We all are working in the same field but we are not like race horses that who is going to come first or second, we are all creative people and we create our characters according to how we think and so i think you cannot really compare but, the admiration will always be there.
* 266 released films!
You can see the full interview on YouTube here: the Sridevi conversation begins at around 1.28.
Three things stand out in the interview; she has always maintained that she never saw Sridevi or any other actress as a rival per se, she has brought up the same point that we are not horses on a race that come in as number one or two and that she admired Sridevi. We have the transcript of an interview here - where Madhuri Dixit said the same thing exactly 30 years ago!!
Sridevi attended Madhuri Dixit's birthday parties, wedding reception, TV show and worked with her in an advertisement. We have such a huge archive of the two ladies greeting each other and laughing together at various award functions and even dancing together!
The only rivalry there was, was usually instigated by producers or media reps who were trying to sell their films or magazines. For 31 years we've collected interviews of Sridevi and Madhuri Dixit and there is such scant - if any - mud slinging by either actress,
BUT the fans and their respective camps have been vile. Esp on Twitter and social media. I used to think it was unnecessarily dirty and the worst - but then you saw the rival camps of fans of Shahrukh / Salman Khan / Akshay Kumar / Hrithik Roshan and holy shizzzzzz - at least the fan wars between Sridevi and Madhuri are tame in comparison and only on Twitter by twats!
