Sridevi in Kalaakaar (1983): Her white and gold dance ensemble was a modern take on the Amrapali costume.
The Tamil original Payanangal Mudivathillai (1982) was a smash hit and the remake in Hindi with a kick-ass soundtrack (Neele Neele ambar par lives on), should have set the box-office on fire too - but it didn't. A time when Hindi cine-going audiences were not up for - spoiler alert - tragic endings. In fact, every tragedy Sridevi starred in or in any film where she died on screen was a flop - bar none. Someone so full of life and bubbly on screen, the audience couldn't see her light diminish be it in Heer Ranjha, Sherni, Lamhe... or any other film where the nation's favourite leading lady faded on screen.
