Following the massive success of their first film together, Himmatwala, Sridevi and Jeetendra went on to do Jaani Dost, Justice Chaudhary and Mawaali, all released within months of each other in1983. Directed by the "Manmohan Desai of the South," K. Raghavendra Rao, Sridevi appeared in 24 films made by him in her unparalleled career.
A mass entertainer, Jaani Dost was successful in key centres, despite a tepid response from film reviewers. 40 years on, upon reflection, well, the movie has a few great songs and Sridevi looks like a doll. Its nice to see Parveen Babi looking ultra glamorous before things went off kilter for her. The songs are great fun - and of course there's the monkey!
A trained chimp from the US was brought on for key comedic scenes and paid more than most heroines; a whopping Rs 5 lakh! A huge amount in those days (hell, still a huge amount!). Here's a key reference, most heroines were paid between Rs2-4 lakh in the early 1980s.
Sridevi of course famously was the highest paid Indian actress of her time.
