On a recently aired episode of Indian Idol, actress Mahima Chaudhry revealed that during her first screen test with Subash Ghai for Pardes, she wore Sridevi's outfit (See the clip here - head to 35:24). Perhaps a little bit of luck and talent rubbed off as Mahima got the job - and the biggest hit of her career.
Mahima as Ganga in Pardes remains her most enduring and endearing character. The music, the magic of Ghai... Sadly, the director lost his touch and understanding the pulse of the Indian audience as he hasn't had a hit since the 90s. Taal remains his last hit and after that, whoaa, a string of expensive flops; Yaadein (2001), Joggers Park (2003), Kisna (2005), Black and White (2008), Yuvraaj (2008), Kaanchi (2014) and a film we didn't even know released, came and went - Hero (2015).
Losing his Midas touch is tragic, but the music and legacy will live-on. We'll remember Subash Ghai for his masala capers, not his recent releases. Keeping in mind Anil Kapoor's quote that Ghai still has 'it'; lady luck didn't favour him in his last seven films, but she'll be back.
