Vinod Khanna and Sridevi in Pathar Ke Insan (1990) - released 25 years ago today!
We don't really celebrate anniversaries of movies that were total disasters at the box office but these stills of Sridevi looking so pretty, reminded us, why we went to eagerly watch the movie - back in the day!
Perhaps the original idea was good, but the execution was a hot mess - the remake of the Tamil film Vidiyum Varai Kaathiru (1981), written and directed by K. Bhagyaraj, was remade in Malayalam as Sharam (1982) and in Hindi as Pathar Ke Insan (1990). But the decade gap between original release and remake showed as many of the novel ideas of '81, seemed shoddy nearly a decade later.
One of the missteps in Sridevi's post Chandni, Chaalbaaz streak of success, though she danced like a dream and acted fine, she couldn't pull the crowds in for repeat viewing. The scale of the film was large and had a stellar cast including Jackie Shroff, Poonam Dhillon, Moon Moon Sen, but the songs weren't that memorable and the film edit is... rough. It's so choppy as the movie couldn't decide which genre it belonged to. A mystery, a psychological thriller, a tragedy, a family drama, a feud between sisters, dance versus music...? So it became a hodge podge of everything thrown in together.
