The day our world stopped: Sridevi made headlines the world over on 25 February 2018... as it was announced in the unearthly hours of the 24th (Feb 2018), Sridevi had tragically, shockingly, unexpectedly died in Dubai.
We heard the news on Instagram first - and didn't believe it. And then, the Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi himself, posted on Twitter, his condolence message to the family and fans of Sridevi. And the truth sunk in.
That week, our humble fan blog saw the statistics sky rocket to 4million views per day - and we were averaging about 4,000 views per week before that.
We had several news sits and blogs directly lift copy and images - only New York Times incredible fact checkers and sub-editors reached out to go over a few questions. Now, I'm not even remotely connected to 'the great Sridevi' and know next to nothing about her personal life, but her career, well, obviously we are quasi-encyclopedic on that front as we've been working on the Sridevi fan site for nearly 26 years.
The books on Sridevi have used us for reference, one shamelessly lifted copy, the latest Sridevi book by Dhiraj Kumar looks... insipid, derivative and reductive} three words he'll be forced to look up and draw his own conclusions.
As ai-images take over social media, where we boldly predict that unless there's some sort of governance, control and protection of rights to an artist's identity and likeness, there will be more fake pics online than real,, we'll be posting real vs fake pics side by side to let new gen know, what you see online is fake.
Sridevi... wherever you are, we hope you're at peace. There will never be another Sridevi in the world.
