Released on July 7, 1983, director S. P. Muthuraman’s Adutha Varisu (The Next Heir) emerged as a solid commercial hit at the Tamil box office. Adapted from the 1972 Hindi hit Raja Jani (itself drawing loosely from the Anastasia motif), the action drama features Rajinikanth as Kannan, a small-time bounty hunter tasked with grooming an unrefined street dancer into a lost royal heiress to claim a massive property inheritance. 

While Rajinikanth anchored the narrative with his signature swagger and comedic rhythm, the film belongs in equal measure to Sridevi. Playing Valli - the nomadic girl forced to transform into Princess Radha - she delivers a tour-de-force in physical comedy and expressive nuance. Her character arc demanded two distinct modes: raw, energetic gypsy exuberance and aristocratic poise. Sridevi shifted between those registers effortlessly, using her fluid body language and micro-expressions to turn Pygmalion-esque training montages into pure gold. 

Track numbers like "Aasai Nooru Vagai" and "Pesa Koodathu" highlighted her irresistible chemistry with Rajinikanth and solidified her standing as the undisputed queen of early 1980s South Indian cinema. 

Contemporary critics, including Tamil magazine Kalki, were somewhat mixed regarding the script, citing a lack of originality given its well-trodden remake pedigree. However, reviewers unanimously praised the electrifying lead performances and Ilaiyaraaja’s vibrant musical score. 

Producer Dwarakish and director Muthuraman viewed the film as a masterclass in mainstream commercial execution. Rajinikanth frequently celebrated Sridevi's unmatched instincts, noting that her innate ability to match his fast-paced style made their collaborations efortless.

Decades later, Adutha Varisu remains a quintessential star vehicle - a testament to how pure star charisma can elevate a standard template into lasting cinematic entertainment.
