27 Songs Lata Mangeshkar Sang for Sridevi: The Definitive Listicle

Sridevi with Lata Mangeshkar in 1999
Remembering Bharat Ratna Lata Mangeshkar on her birth anniversary today. I, like my generation, the generation before me, and the one after, have spent a lifetime listening to the "voice divine" and remember the great one with a fandom that borders on pure devotion.

It can easily be stated that in her quest for perfection, she crossed so many milestones that she left all of humanity behind. When she passed that fateful day, 6 February 2022, at the age of 92 no less, she had earned her final rest. All the octaves she touched with ease, in the quiet solitude of eternal peace, India mourned.

The loss was felt by a nation. Such was her greatness that voices from around the world prayed for her; the Prime Minister of India flew down from Delhi to honour her in her final journey. Words are not enough to describe the impact she had on music, movies, Mumbai... the country.

In journalism, one doesn't look for blind praise, and every critic and hack has tried to dig up the worst scenarios pertaining to the woman who beat the odds and was a legend in her own lifetime. Heck, in her early 20s, she was already considered beyond compare or competition. But vested interests and lesser talents have cooked up several stories—notoriously "the Mangeshkar monopoly"—but the alliteration made for a catchy headline, and those notes spread like fire, but only the truth was left burnt in the ashes. Listen to several songs of Lataji spanning several decades: we have neither heard nor seen a better singer who could have surpassed her in that or any era. So instead of acknowledging they couldn't measure up to her power or prowess, long false narratives were concocted. None of which bears repeating. The strains of unharmonious notes reached the Mangeshkar doorstep but never entered.

Prolific, hard-working, dedicated Lata Mangeshkar focused on nothing but work. Her songbook is a mighty tome, filled with so many chapters; while others worked to slander her name, she worked to honour the legacy of her esteemed surname. Had she not fought several battles against producers, music companies, owners, writers, directors... men in power (and let's be real, they were all men), the current crop of singers would have even fewer rights. There are several battles being waged against "the music mafia" of India today, but the war lost the lioness that was Lata. Alas. It's a loss for music, let alone the music industry.

As a prolific singer like no other in the history of recorded music, Lata Mangeshkar, the nightingale of India, had the kind of respect, adulation, and admiration that few others in the country—if not the continent—have enjoyed. Charting her entire catalogue of recorded songs is near-impossible; many have tried online—and God bless them for their Sisyphean task. We know how hard it is—we've been trying to chart a similar record, charting Sridevi's filmography, to honour Sridevi's legacy for posterity too.

Sridevi, in her prolific career had several Binaca Geetmala Top of the Charts songs sung by Lata Mangeshkar. As we chronicled the list of her 73 Hindi film appearances (and yes, we have the definitive list in the archive here obviously!), it was surprising to note that Lataji sang only 27 songs for her in Sridevi's entire career! Others who provided playback vocals for Sridevi included Asha Bhosle, Kavita Krishnamurthy, Alka Yagnik, Alisha Chinai, Anuradha Paudwal, Sadhana Sargam and Usha Uthup in Hindi film albums.

Over the past 25 years, we've tried to collate all the images of Sridevi with Lata Mangeshkar over the years here, be it at the mahurat of Lamhe, the launch of Lataji's perfume or music functions that both Sridevi and Lata Manshehkar graced - a rare sighting as both superstars were shy of attending parties and public functions for no rhyme nor reason.

We went into a deep dive and listed below are all the songs Lata Mangeshkar sang for Sridevi;

Postscript: Kindly drop us a note if you know of any song that's missing from this list! Unlike others, we are always happy to amend and self-correct when faced with new, accurate information!
