The lead actress of Judaai (1997) could not stay separated from Bollywood for too long; Sridevi had to make a comeback.

But contrary to expectations, her husband Boney Kapoor will not relaunch her.

History has it that three years ago, Boney had not let her work in a Yash Chopra film opposite Amitabh Bachchan, arguing that he wanted her to make a grand return in a home-production. Boney told Yash Chopra that he was keen to re-launch his wife in his own production and requested him to cast someone else in his.

At this point, Bachchan’s good friend Amar Singh stepped in to convince Boney to let her do the film, but in vain, (Mumbai Mirror, July 28, 2008).

It turns out Sridevi’s comeback film will be produced by R Balki (of Paa fame) and directed by Balki’s wife Gauri Shinde. Sridevi plays a woman who does not understand English but gets married to a very upwardly mobile man. The story revolves around the repercussions of this marriage and the way in which she overcomes the issues.

A source says, “Balki and Gauri have worked very hard on this subject for the past few months and are now ready to roll.”

Rumour has it that Sridevi’s comeback was supposed to be announced at Yash Raj Studios during a Kareena Kapoor-Sridevi interaction at a recent TV-film awards ceremony. But Kareena, who had danced to a medley of Sridevi’s songs, forgot about the announcement in a moment of nervousness and excitement.

Apparently, Sridevi was flooded with film offers since 2008. But post Judaai, she only did a cameo in Halla Bol (2008).

Was she not signing films because she didn’t want to go against Boney Kapoor’s wishes?

The source adds, “She loved Balki and Gauri’s film offer. She requested all her friends and relatives to keep it under wraps.”

When contacted, Sridevi’s husband refused to let out the secret. However, a source very close to the actress said, “Sridevi is very excited about her comeback. She has hit the gym and is regularly going to a nutritionist to get into shape.”

If there is scope for it, that is.

"SRIDEVI DIDN'T WANT ME TO GET INTO FILMS"

Sridevi’s nephew and popular Tamil actress Maheshwari’s brother Deva was recently in town for the premiere of his film Erra Gulabilu. The rising star was in a great mood as Sridevi herself was present during the occasion to lend support.

In a candid chat, the actor speaks about his aunt’s influence on his life and how he got into the industry.

“I studied MBA in the UK before coming back to India. I did want to act someday and wanted to be part of the film industry. I spoke to Gautham Vasudev Menon Sir and told him about my interest in films. One night Gautham Sir met me and offered me a cop’s role in a thriller movie, I was shocked,” says the actor.

Deva can’t stop praising Gautham Vasudev Menon. “He was guiding me all the way. Everyone, even established actors, wants to work with him. I was lucky to be a part of his film.”

Sridevi, of course, has been a major influence in the actor’s life. “Sridevi is my aunt. She has always been like a mother to my sister and I. We lived in a joint family all our life. Later she moved to Mumbai. She was always very approachable and supportive,” he says, adding, “At first she didn’t want me to act so I lied that I was working for an MNC. They found out later. But she is always there, like a second mother to us. We are very proud to be part of the family.”

Sridevi, however, never told her nephew the reasons behind her apprehensions about him taking up acting. “She never answered. She just didn’t want me to get into films,” says Deva, adding, “The other thing was that I was the only one from the family of actors who had done his Masters. So, they wanted me to settle down and continue in my field. But, when I started working, they were happy and encouraged me in everything I did.”

The actor says that he, along with his star sister Maheshwari, would always hang around with Sridevi as kids. “She was very possessive about us. She used to take us to her shoots and would also take us with her whenever she had shows abroad. She would also take us shopping.”

Deva says that whenever the actress came to Chennai, she would throw a huge party for the family at her farm house. “We got to meet Janhvi and Khushi. We always make the most of the time she spends with us,” he added.

Having a superstar actress as an aunt has other advantages. One gets to meet all the stars. Deva too had his share of star viewings. “Yes, I met many of them. I used to get very excited then, but now it has become routine,” says the actor.

There were rumours that the actress found her nephew’s debut movie too vulgar, but Sridevi herself clears the air. “I am here to encourage my nephew, and I really liked the film. I wish him all the best for the movie and for his career in the film industry.”

Sridevi, Anil Kapoor, Neetu Singh, Sanjay Kapoor, Sunit Kapoor at TBZ

Sridevi attended the opening of the store TBZ - The Original. It was also the launch of a signature line of jewellery designed by Sunita Kapoor (wife of Anil Kapoor) at TBZ showroom at Santacruz.

At the event, many of the Kapoor family members attended. Anil Kapoor and Sunita Kapoor were seen greeting all the guests, family and friends. The always elegant Neetu Singh was seen chatting with Sridevi and others at the event.

Dressed in a simple white shirt and blue jeans, Sridevi looked as beautiful as ever - when asked if she would return to films, she said she has no plans - "for now."

The actress was last seen on the small screen two years ago in the TV show Malini Iyer. After a strong opening, the tepid TRPs killed the show after just one season.

Sridevi at Global Indian Film and TV awards by Balaji

Balaji Telefilms Ltd., India's creator of content in films, television and new media, hosted the 1st Global Indian Film & Television Honours (GIFTH)- the nation's first joint film and television awards event.

Sridevi attended the event in a blue diaphanous, flowing Elie Saab gown, from the Fall 2010 collection.

She arrived with her family, daughters Janhvi Kapoor and Khushi Kapoor, husband Boney Kapoor.

Actress Kareena Kapoor performed a medley of Sridevi's hits in honour of the former Queen of Bollywood.

At the event, producer - and daughter of actor Jeetendra, Ekta Kapoor said, "Sridevi is iconic. This generation has no idea about her fan following. Sridevi was a darling of the masses. Kareena and Sridevi shared the same bubbliness and mass connect. I have watched their films Himmatwala and Mujhe Kuch Kehna Hai and been witness to the mass hysteria of their audience. I have never seen this kind of mass reaction for any other actress."

Held in Mumbai on February 12, 2011, the event saw six main categories namely Popular, Technical, Programming, Achievement (for which there will be no nominations), Special Honours and Voters' Choice and 30 sub categories.
