Sridevi confirms Balki's Next! Indian Actress on a roll after English Vinglish's super success

The last of the female superstars of Hindi cinema - Sridevi, who proved that she still had a lot more acting left in her with her critically acclaimed performance in English Vinglish - was in the capital to do her bit for women empowerment.

Driven to the plush Lodhi hotel in a cab chauffeured by a woman driver, the actress was left impressed. Just like her reel character Shashi in English Vinglish, who empowers herself, Sridevi was all for women taking brave steps and making their place in the world.

The actress, who left fans wanting for more, admitted that she was waiting for a good project to come by. Something that she believed in and knew she could do justice to. But weren't husband Boney Kapoor and filmmaker R Balki both asking her to star in their projects? So, who had she signed up with? Sridevi said, "R Balki, but it's early days to discuss the project."

Would we see her reprise her Mr India act once more? Sridevi said, "Yes, but that's in the offing. First we are working on the sequel to No Entry, Mr India would be post that."

And as remixes and versions of her old numbers hit the airwaves, what does the actress - who is often called the Meryl Streep of India have to say. "It's great fun to watch these numbers," she said.

A career which spanned three decades and sharing space with the leading lights of cinema like NT Rama Rao, A Nageshwar Rao, Kamal Haasan, Rajinikanth, Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan - who is that one actor she would like to work with amongst the new crop.

"They are all very good, I enjoyed Vicky Donor and Barfi. Ranbir was amazing," Sridevi said.

When asked about the one role she is looking play on the big screen, Sridevi replied, "Mother India."

Though Kamal Haasan put to rest rumours surrounding a Sadma 2, the actress agreed that they had done their bit with Sadma and there was no need to do a sequel.

Though many feel that the Padma Shri came years too late for Sridevi, the actress said she was overwhelmed by the love and support of her fans.

Graceful and elegant, she truly seems to be the star for all seasons.

Sridevi: Fluent in sounding fluent onscreen

Don't know how we missed this. An interview Sridevi did in Canada prior to the world premiere of her film English Vinglish.

From The Globe and Mail

Pic of Sridevi by Moe Doiron
When Sridevi started making movies, she spoke no Hindi. The actress, who grew up speaking the South Indian language Telugu, simply repeated lines she did not understand.

“They used to call me ‘parrot.’ I used to mug lines, knowing the meaning and giving the expression, without knowing the language,” the star of more than 250 Bollywood movies recalled last month during an interview at the Toronto International Film Festival, adding that she also regularly performed in Kannada and Malayalam, two other Indian languages she did not speak.

And now? “I can communicate with my servants, I can fight with my husband in Hindi.”

So Sridevi can identify with the character she plays in English Vinglish, an Indian housewife who wins some cred with her disrespectful family when she sneaks off to English classes during a visit to New York – and re-emerges fluent.

Indeed, the 49-year-old actress found the story of the diffident Shashi’s transformative language classes so compelling that it brought her out of a 14-year retirement during which she had raised two daughters with her husband, movie producer Boney Kapoor, and painted as a hobby. Reading the script from Gauri Shinde, an advertising director making her feature-film directorial debut, Sridevi decided she wanted to play Shashi.

“I was happy with what I was doing. I didn’t plan [it.] I just loved the character,” she said.

Her own English, as she speaks these works, sounds wonderfully fluent, but features a limited vocabulary, suggesting she has perfected the same technique for learning any number of languages. Speaking English and studying abroad, she points out, are viewed as necessary to success in India. (Although Hindi is the country’s official language, India boasts hundreds of regional languages, of which 22 are recognized by the constitution; English is still used in government, and remains most people’s first choice of second language.)

Sridevi’s multilingualism may also explain why, when asked what has changed in Bollywood during her absence since 1997, the first thing she mentions is the improved technology, especially the use of synchronized sound. Traditionally, Bollywood producers added the soundtrack in postproduction; voice tracks recorded on set using sync sound have come into use only in the last decade.

“After the film, you would go to the theatre and dub. When the performance is emotional, or in comedy where there are [issues of] timing, it’s very difficult to get the same effect,” she said. “… The sync sound: That really helps an actor to retain the spontaneity of the performance.”

She also sees narrative change coming to a commercial industry that has long depended on formulaic melodramas performed by beloved megastars who appear in several films a year.

“I enjoy doing the commercial films; I am grateful to those films. Whatever I am today, it is thanks to those films,” she said, but added, “They are looking for different stories, something interesting, not the same usual stuff. That is very welcome. The story is the hero of the film.”

In that regard, English Vinglish is a film designed not only to please South Asian moviegoers but to attract global audiences not steeped in Bollywood traditions – beyond expecting every Indian movie to feature a lavish wedding, which English Vinglish does. Will its crossover appeal push Sridevi in new directions?

“I am hoping. It all depends on how much more the audience wants to see me.”

Sridevi has some sort of superpower

Did you cackle every time Ramamurthy made his strong South Indian presence felt in the film English Vinglish? Here’s a little secret. Though most of it was directed and sketched out before hand, it was Rajeev Ravindranathan’s spontaneity that added humour to his dialogues. Sitting across the coffee table, Rajeev, who performed his play over the weekend, spoke to us about Sridevi’s magic, and how he juggles advertising, film and theatre. Excerpts:

How did you manage to pull off your act in English Vinglish?
Rajeev Ravindranathan:
Gauri (Shinde) was very clear that she wanted me to be the comic relief in the film. My role was to add humour and I had to work on that, because I wanted to bring about a balance between the stereotypical ‘Madrasi’ image and the actual. While there were dialogues and a background to work with, I’d often say something spontaneously, which would nail the scene. Sridevi’s comic timing is even better. It was her idea to say ‘iyyo’ when aeiou was written on the board. She is aware of everything that’s going on around her while shooting. It seems like she possesses some sort of superpower.

Padma Shree; Sridevi

SRIDEVI: A recent list of 50 Iconic Actresses of Indian Cinema by CNN-IBN stated that while there are many divas, Sridevi will forever remain the First Female Superstar of Bollywood. The reason is elementary. Sridevi's blazing beauty and talent sent the Indian and the overseas populace into a hysterical frenzy unlike any other. From Tathaiya Tathaiya Ho and Hawa Hawai to Mere Hathon Mein and Morni Bagama. From Sadma and Lamhe to Mr. India and Chaalbaaz. Sridevi is still the longest running No.1 megastar of Hindi Cinema and in 2012 she also became the only actress to make a victorious comeback with English Vinglish. With a whole new generation now falling for this Indian Meryl Streep, Sridevi proves that some legends are truly timeless. No wonder this Chandni was Yash Chopra's ultimate favourite.

Sridevi trending on Tumblr

Hhhaha. Saw this on a tumblr site. People really liked the French dude!

Anil Kapoor, Sridevi's comeback was overwhelming

Anil Kapoor spoke about his former co-star, and now sister-in-law, superstar Sridevi, in the latest issue of Stardust.

Anil Kapoor, "Sridevi’s comeback was overwhelming for all of us. She effortlessly sacrificed everything… her name, her stardom, her status. She left when she was at a peak. She made every effort to become part of the Kapoors. She committed herself to the family, stood by it through thick and thin. Not once did she look behind and crib about what she had lost in the bargain. I hope she never changes as a woman. God has been kind to her for that effort she made to make all of us her own...."

No Film with Sridevi planned, and Sadma sequel is preposterous says Kamal Haasan!

No Sadma sequel with Sridevi: Kamal Haasan

Reports doing the rounds suggests that Kamal Haasan is doing another film with Sridevi, thereby reviving the pair that rocked on the screen of Tamil cinema all through the ’70s. Some reports also suggest that Haasan is planning a sequel to their 1983 classic Sadma with Sridevi. However the actor dashes all hopes of another film with the English Vinglish actress.

Says Haasan, “There are no plans of a film with Sridevi. And this idea of a sequel to Sadma is preposterous. We did the story twice over in Tamil and Hindi. I am sure she is as bored of it as I am. Much as I would like to work with her again, I’ve no script that would do justice to her especially after English Vinglish.”

Sridevi has gone on-record to say she has learnt much about acting from Haasan. “If she says so, then I must say she’s good learner. The amount she invests into her role is exemplary. There’s a dispute between Sridevi and me about how many films we’ve done together. She says it’s around 25 films. I say it’s a lot more,” laughs Haasan.

The actor also cuts down talk of a sequel to his 1981 hit Ek Duje Ke Liye which had launched his career in Hindi cinema.

“We had a story idea of how to take the narration forward. But it was used by another director for a project. So the director, K Balachanderji and I decided we wouldn’t get into that space again.”
