Sridevi as Heer in Heer Ranjha (1992):

Gorgeous Sridevi on the sets of Heer Ranjha below and pre publicity shoot for the film above.

Reading up on the film, the movie was plagued with several issues from the get-go. Where do we begin; it was launched in 1990 - so were two other movies based on the same material, the legend of Heer Ranjha. Along with this film, Ishq Khuda Hai and Mehboob mere Mehboob (with Pratibha Singha and Boy Mukherjee!). Three movies with the same plot and premise - insert face palm shot here!

Anil Kapoor tried to change his look for the film with a wig... and after seeing the rushes, he thought he looked bad; so reverted to his own hairstyle. As movies are not shot in sequence, his look is inconsistent throughout the film!

Both stars had a gut intuition that the movie might not work - they mentioned in separate interviews with different magazines in the early 90s - but on account of their affection for the veteran producer and director Harmesh Malhotra (who by all accounts was a gem of a man), went ahead with it, distrusting their instincts on the film's fate at the box-office - and hoping for the best. With almost zero pre-release publicity for the movie, the film barely made a ripple at the turnstiles.

However, decades later, the movie has a life of its own and a cult following as we've noticed that the gallery dedicated to the film always does well. So here are some more pics of gorgeous Sri as Heer in Heer Ranjha.

On hindsight, it seems inevitable that the movie would tank - and it did. Shame though as Sridevi looked and acted well. A few of the songs are great. But it wasn't the time for nostalgia and a tale told so often...
