The simplicity and bizarre plot line of a middle-class wife selling her husband to a wealthy woman for cash - was just about universally panned by the critics back in 1987 - and yet even the harshed critics wrote how the film was entertaining and engrossing, largely due to its ambitious cast and music.
A remake of a South-Indian hit, despite mixed early reports the movie went to not only recover its hefty cost, it made a healthy profit for all those invested in the film. The hoi polloi loved it. Judaai was the seventh biggest hit of 1997 in India and Sridevi picked up yet another Best Actress nomination for her farewell film (she went on to take a near 15 year hiatus).
It is one of several films we can look at where Sridevi was better than the film she was in. Its a unique talent that not many possess today.
