Sridevi and Anil Kapoor in Ram Avtar

Sridevi and Anil Kapoor in Ram Avtar

Sridevi's look from the song Nigode mardon ka - a comical seduction song filled with the over-the-top uber-excess of 80s fashion. The film was released (and tanked!) back in 1988!

Sridevi!

Sridevi as Heer in Heer Ranjha  From the popular and probably the best song in the film, Rab ne banaya tujhe... Sung by Lata Mangeshark, composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.

Sridevi in yellow in Kaun Sachcha Kaun Jhootha (1997)

Sridevi in yellow in Kaun Sachcha Kaun Jhootha (1997)

It's popular to say - because of what the word means - that Judaai was the last film she did before Sridevi took her long break. Well, it was the last hit for sure, but KSKJ was the last film she did before her self-imposed sabbatical from the screen.

Sridevi acted well in the murder-mystery/crime thriller, looked great and was just phenomenal in the song Hakka Ila Re...

Sridevi quote, unquote, "I can act also!"

"In Tamil films, they love to see me act naturally. But in Hindi films, they want a lot of glamour, richness and masala. My bad luck was that my first big hit in Hindi films turned out to be a commercial one (Himmatwala). When I did a character role in Sadma, the picture flopped. So people started casting me only for glamour roles. But one day I'm going to prove to everyone that I can act also."

-- Sridevi, 1987

Sridevi and Jeetendra had four releases in 1983, starting off with the biggest hit of the year, Himmatwala. Then came Jaani Dost, Justice Chaudhary and Mawaali and all proved successful at the box-office.

The Southern Sirens: Sridevi and Silk Smitha: Six appearances together: The listicle

The Southern Superstars: Sridevi, Rajnikanth and Silk Smitha from a scene in the Tamil hit Adhutha Varisu (1983).

Sridevi acted with fellow Telugu actress (and mega-watt sex symbol) Silk most memorably in the classic Tamil tragedy Moondram Pirai (and later in the remake Sadma). A reminder that for all her oomph and broad appeal of the southern siren, Silk, née Vijayalakshmi Vadlapatla, was a fine actress capable of a lot more than the narrow prism of her perennially typecast repertoire.

Sridevi was three years younger than Silk and the two Telugu ladies are interlinked via many a movie, albeit a tenuous bond. #TBH Silk often had a scene and song, or an extended cameo or guest appearance in the Tamil, Telugu or Hindi movies where Sridevi was the main lead. In the 12 years where their paths crossed on film sets, not much was said of one about the other, although they appeared in;

  • Moondram Pirai (1982), Tamil
  • Thankiattu Raja (1982), Tamil
  • Adhutha Varisu (1983), Tamil
  • Jaani Dost (1983), Hindi
  • S.P.Bhayankar (1984), Tamil
  • Govinda Govinda (1994), Telugu

PS: not sure about one of the pics (might be from a Telugu film) but theothers are all from the 1989 hit - and one of many career-defining films of Sridevi.

Sridevi with Bappi Lahiri: Top Ten Films of Bappi Lahiri and Sridevi

Born on 27 November 1952, today is music director and sometime singer Bappi Lahiri's 69th birthday. The perpetually decked-in-gold composer's career is spotted with hits and flops, great reviews and sharp critiques, but Bappi da seems to have sailed through life without letting too much affect him. From winning the best Music Director award for Sharaabi to creating the cringe-iest Michael Jackson tribute song/video ever made (google at your peril), the jabs of media arrows seem to bounce off the rolly-polly one. Bless. Ignorance be bliss indeed.

We have quite a collection of images of Sridevi with Bappi Lahiri over the years. After all, the music director's long link to the iconic Indian actress traces back to her first Hindi hit. Bappi da composed the chart-topping numbers for her in Himmatwala and throughout the 1980s, he was the music director of nearly a dozen of her films (although in an interview on TV soon after Sridevi's tragic passing, Bappi said he did 25 films with Sridevi - um.. not sure about that!).

He said, "Sridevi ke saath maine almost 25 films kiya. Unka jo style tha woh ekdum pakad leta tha audience ko. Sri ki jo adayein thi, kya dance tha! Jaisa western, waisa classical. Main industry mein 48 years se kaam kar raha hoon, maine aisa versatility kahin nahi dekha," [With Sridevi I did almost 25 films. Her style used to absolutely capture the audience. Her grace, her dance, her western, her classical - I've been in the industry for 48 years, but I've never seen anymore more versatile than her."].

The most memorable collabs of Sridevi where Bappi Lahiri was the composer of her film soundtrack include;
  1. Himmatwala (1983)
  2. Jaani Dost (1983)
  3. Tohfa (1984)
  4. Maqsad (1984)
  5. Masterji (1985)
  6. Suhagan (1986)
  7. Sone Pe Suhaaga (1988)
  8. Gair Kanooni (1989)
  9. Guru (1989)
  10. Naaka Bandi  (1991)

Sridevi in the mid 1980s in Bollywood

Sridevi in the mid 1980s in Bollywood.

The title on the image above is odd... There is a film called Mohabbat Ke Dushman which had music by Kalyanji Anandji but Sridevi sure as hell wasn't in it. It was a Prakash Mehra film with Hema Malini and Raaj Kumar, Sanjay Dutt and Farha... so how did the misprint occur?!

Sridevi's look from Waqt Ki Awaz (1988).

The fifth biggest hit of 1988, the movie was released during the peak of Mithun Chakraborty and Sridevi's career and was one of the biggest openers the decade. The songs were a huge hit, esp Ek Do Teen Chaar, Pyar Chahiye Kitni Baar...
