Released on July 7, 2017, its been five years since the release of Sridevi's swansong, her final curtain call... the thriller Mom (2017).
A career so resplendent, you cannot, in good conscience or with empirical authority state that this was her crowning achievement as Sridevi's illustrious filmography is studded with several memorable performances.
Pity, it took her untimely and tragic passing - an accidental death by drowning - for the governing body to recognise her work - and she was conferred with a National Award for Best Actress for this fine, albeit flawed, film. Her performance elevates this movie - a revenge drama that came in a year filled with revenge dramas (Maatr, Aai all stemmed from the same tree). In truth, the award was a recognition of her vast body of work - 50 of her 54 years on earth spent in film studios - more than just this singular achievement.
There are several scenes where Sridevi shines, just shakes you to the core with her realism - the hospital break-down scene alone is worth a deep, intense study especially for actors, young and old. Her body language, her tremor, her silent screams and ache... Cine-philes have noted, its a long one-take scene that she commands over with such effortless elegance. Not sure if that's the apt word but it fits...
So, here's something odd we did - sent the entire filmography of Sridevi to an auditor. Yeah! You heard us. When the film was released, a PR spiel and scroll was doled out to the lazy film-press that this was the 300th film of Sridevi - and apart from us here, cannot thin of a single soul who questioned the veracity of that highly questionable albeit neat little number.
The internet and Indian media has been beating the drum that Sridevi did 300 films - egged on by retarded fans who question nothing. As shown before, the 300 mark of Sridevi is categorically not true. We found 266 films - only to then realise some within that list are mere dubbed versions thereby making the exact number lost in a fog of inaccuracy and mis-reporting.
But we'll get down to the bottom of it!
Whatever the number is, however high or low, nothing takes away from "the hardest working actress of her time", the great Sridevi.
