Young Ekta Kapoor, Jeetendra and Sridevi take the stage |
South Icons: NTR and Krishna |
Released in early February 1983, Jeetendra at the time was going through a rough patch, Sridevi may have been ruling movies in Tamil and Telugu films but after her flop Solwa Saawan, she herself had little expectation of a career in Bombay (back then!). So when the film went on to be a runaway success, it surprised one and all - especially Bombay critics.
These few throwback pics capture a momentous occasion, a celebration of the film's success. A feature on the silver jubilee function of the Hindi hit Himmatwala (below pic - click to enlarge and read), reveals little except the Filmfare writer's abysmal recap, unfiltered ignorance and prejudice. The writing will make your head reel back in shock - hence, not worth the energy of transcribing/re-typing.
The only thing I'm taking away from this is the image of Jeetendra and Sridevi taking the stage after the unprecedented and unexpected success of their first (of many!) collabs together, the wildly successful blockbuster that was Himmtwala (1983). Jeetendra mentioned in an interview that he was shy of taking the stage but his daughter, the young Ekta Kapoor, was not and took to the limelight from the get-go. Fearless then as she is today!
The images are from the end of 1983 and Sridevi was just 20, having a stellar year as her films across the nation in multiple languages were doing well. Little did she know, what an incredible career lay ahead.
