Sridevi images manipulated through apps and filters trend on Social Media

Sridevi in the film Aulad... well, one pic is real, and the other, overdone by some whitening app.

Sridevi images manipulated through apps and filters trend on Social Media. Draining Sridevi of her originality, her choices, her reality, "fans" reinterpret how they would like her to look versus how she was. Which was perfectly divine. Say no to fakes, and yes to the OG!

Anil Kapoor talks about working with the best: Sridevi

Sridevi and Anil Kapoor with their respective
Best Actress and Best Actor award
for Mr.India back in 1988

Excerpt from an interview with Anil Kapoor in the early 1990s.

"...if one reads between the words, Anil in turn seems enamoured by Sridevi. "When I was doing Joshilaay, Sridevi was cast opposite Sunny. So it was important that I too have a heroine from the same bracket. At that time I wasn't such a big star so Jaya Prada refused to act opposite to me. I then approached Meenakshi. It took a lot of convincing from me and Shekhar before Meenakshi agreed to work with me. At that time, Boney and I made up our mind that I should work with Sridevi. To prove that I was the best, I had to work with the best. So we began a film Govinda, Bapu was the director and Sridevi the heroine. So that was it, I was with the best. Govinda never got made and we started Mr.India

Since then, I've done quite a few films with her and even now there are four or five films coming, Lamhe, Gurudev, Heer Ranjha and Roop Ki Rani."

He pauses and before I can fill the hiatus, continues, "Till I met Sridevi, I was not bothered about my on-screen appearance. I used to have a stubble. I would be scruffy - and I was on the trip that good acting will count, looks can be overlooked. But Sridevi takes so much care of her looks, her appearance as well as her acting. It dawned on me that with the kind of money we charge, it is essential that we take care of ourselves. We owe it to our producers and the audiences to look good. She finishes at eight every night, if she does shoot later than ten, she'll come at 12 the next day which ensures she is looking fresh in every frame. This helps to ensure repeat audiences since the looks and performance both pull back people. I think that not only is she a very versatile actress but also an amazing lady. A little reserved perhaps but with me, we both talk almost non-stop when we are together."

This stage show in London was 'the' show of the 90s.

What a phenomenon it was...

Wembley, London, UK—September 1990: The concert 'Jumma Chumma' took place at the Wembley Stadium, headlined by the Bollywood megastars Amitabh Bachchan, Sridevi, Aamir Khan, Salman Khan. The stadium was packed to capacity with the Indian diaspora, as well as the Hindi-film watching populace.

Prakash Raj honours Sridevi

A fan like an generation of actors, Prakash Raj did the most relaxed interview with Sridevi during her English Vinglish promotions. Only two years younger than Sri, he was a fan as he admitted on TV, while hosting his reality tv game show. His tribute to Sridevi was sweet.

Banglore born actor of note turns a year older today - we wish him well.

Found this tweet below as he reminded the world of what Sridevi meant to India's film industry.

Was thinking the other day, Sridevi's funeral was attended by the entire film industry - it's easier to make a list of actors/actresses who didn't attend (Karishma Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor were out of town eg).

Thank you Sreedevi ji..for entertaining..for the memorable roles you portrayed..for teaching nuances of acting..for being a wonderful human being..and more importantly for inspiring and empowering women with the way you groomed and held yourself with dignity. Will miss u forever

Sridevi on the sets of Laadla: 30 Years of a Smash Hit

Sridevi on the sets of Laadla: 30 Years of a Smash Hit

Released on 25 March 1994 after a slew of Sridevi-Anil Kapoor flops, expectation was low when the film released. But you can't keep a good man - or woman - down. Sridevi's high volume performance got all the whistles and claps (Indian cinema is a audience participation program that requires a theatre!) and though the ending doesn't hold up, the performances do.

For someone who preferred understated performances, Yash Chopra was a huge fan of Sridevi's acid-tongue turned role in Laadla and commented in several media outlets after the film's release, how much he loved Sridevi's performance. Something he said decades later after the premiere of English Vinglish too. There's a clip on Instagram/Insta stories as Shahrukh Khan escorts Sridevi to stage and says, "Sriji, I don't know if Yashji ever told you this, but he told me, you were his favourite performer. Ever."

Sridevi in Laadla: 90s Icon

Sridevi in Laadla: 90s Icon

Sridevi on set, Sridevi on screen. If we measure a performance by the wide gulf of personality and persona on screen, this is probably one of Sridevi's greatest efforts. A shy, hardly verbose, quiet superstar...  who transformed into the fierce, take-no-prisoners diva on screen.

Sridevi on the sets of Laadla (1994)

Sridevi, 30, on the sets of Laadla (1994)

Released 30 years ago, yet another memorable performance by Sridevi. She loved this print power suit look and had it in her personal collection and wore it for several stage shows in the 1990s. I believe its a Manish Malhotra design... but I could be wrong. To be confirmed...

A confident performance, Sheetal wasn't a villain as she was made out to be in reviews for the film. She just wasn't a docile victim waiting to be rescued. The Taming of the Shrew Bollywood-ified to social mores of the 1990s.

Yet another film where though she didn't have the title role, all one remembers is her performance. Truly, the 'great' Sridevi.

Sridevi

Sridevi's bouquet of awards for her swansong Mom

Sridevi's bouquet of awards for her swansong Mom. Sridevi's reign over Indian film history was just entering another chapter and we were discovering new pages in her oeuvre. Still providing exciting performances, mesmerising audiences and critics alike, her infinite spools of talent were still being revealed to the world... when, she hit exit left.

It's our loss entirely.

Choreographer and Reality TV Judge Terence Lewis finally saw English Vinglish

Ok, so he can't spell Sridevi, but the intention and emotion was right on the spot.

Yeah, she really was brilliant and her loss is beyond compare.

Sridevi

Sridevi, "It was not difficult to achieve this. I became a superstar after one hit - Himmatwala (Hindi, 1983), but maintaining this status constantly keeps me on my toes. But wealth and fame are not the ultimate goals in her life. Simple things give me joy in life..."

-- August 1985, Cine Blitz

Nagarjuna and Sridevi in the Telugu film Govinda Govinda (1994)

The film had strong visuals, a gorgeous leading lady and hummable songs... little else. RGV losing his grip on the box-office after the success of his Hindi ventures. Man hasn't made a decent film in decades.
