A rare, rare still of Sridevi and Rekha on the sets of the only film they worked in together, the Tamil classic Meendum Kokila (Rekha left the film before release), when Sridevi was but a teen. Rekha early on had been praising Sridevi and her work, like a jeweller of note, she could recognise a diamond in the rough. Legend has it, Rekha pushed to have Sridevi appear in Hindi films and encouraged Jeetendra to hire her in movies, something corroborated by Jeetendra too.
Over the years, there are several tales of how many producers tried to get Rekha and Sridevi to appear in a film (most famously, the remake of All about Eve--but it never went beyond magazine chatter), but neither found a suitable story or subject. Alas.
Rekha turns 70 today and we wish the legendary beauty, actor and superstar the very best. Rekha is the quintessential movie star, the last of the greats. I wrote in a feature years ago that Rekha is the greatest unemployed actress of our time. The Indian film industry continues to be powerless in coming up with suitable material for someone of her stature and vast ability.
